Giannis Antetokounmpo, the 25-year-old Greek born basketball player, is not only a leader on the court, but also outside it.
The NBA superstar's efforts did not go unnoticed after African-American George Floyd was killed by Minneapolis police on May 25, which has caused a wave of anger not only in the United States but also around the world.
Giannis, who is a model and an idol for the city of Milwaukee, actively participated, along with his brothers Thanasis and Alex, to protest the murder of George Floyd and also handed out water bottles to protesters.
He also took the lead in the demonstration that took place in the city, asking for "change and justice".
“This is our city, man,” he said in the video. “We got to come out here and support.”
“We want change, we want justice, and that’s why we’re out here,” Antetokounmpo said. “That’s what we’re going to do today. That’s why I’m going to march with you. I want my kid to grow up here in Milwaukee, and not to be scared to walk in the streets. I don’t want my kid to have hate in his heart.”
Giannis added that he doesn’t care about publicity.
“We don’t do this for publicity. I really don’t care about publicity. I just want the city of Milwaukee to know that I am here,” he said.
Eric Woodyard of ESPN reported that that the Bucks organisation will be holding a protest match on Sunday on the plaza in front of Fiserv Forum. The protest, in support of social justice, will include its players, coaches, owners, management, and staff, according to Essentially Sports.
