Perfect three-day escape to Serifos island

By 8 years ago

Serifos is a small island in the complex of Cyclades. Its proximity from the capital and natural attributes make it an ideal destination for a quick getaway from the heat and suffering of daily life.

Idyllic beaches - check

Crystal clear water - check

Colourful alleys- check

Super calm atmosphere - check

Amazing food- check

Ferry trip: 2 – 4 hours from Piraeus port- check

IMPORTANT NOTE→ If you are looking for intense nightlife and beach clubs, etc., think before getting onto a ferry to Serifos. While it is beautiful and perfect for a relaxing and restorative experience, it can be disastrous to your “What I did last summer” white album.

In more detail:

Serifos is an island with an imposing Chora. It is built on a rocky hill and is divided in two zones, Kato (lower) Chora and Pano (upper) Chora, which are connected to each other by a stairway. Be mindful though, the stair is steep.

In Kato Chora you will find several cafes and bars that can be very enjoyable at sunset.

The Pano Chora is the part that you can spend time and money in traditional shops with handmade clothes, jewellery and other souvenirs. While a few steps after the shops the main square (platea) is a beautiful place to look and commonly a meeting point. A church, the Town hall, a few petite shops stand alongside the traditional cafes composing a picture of harmony.

Moreover, it’s worth visiting the Venetian Castle, approximately 10 minutes from the main square. Even if it is a bit tiring because of the step climbing, the astonishing view is rewarding, with the added bonus of wandering into the colorful alleys.

IMPORTANT NOTE→ Avoid doing the step climbing before the evening, just trust me you will be better off. The best time is either at early morning or late in the evening.

Beautiful and Cycladic beaches

One of the things that I consider to be of huge importance during my holidays is the beach access and beauty, a point that Serifos satisfied. The best, in my opinion, is the Agios Sostis beach. Sandy and virgin, with the picturesque church at the edge of the cliff, creates the ideal landscape for peace of mind. Don’t forget to take with you cold water and a sun umbrella, as the place is remote.

And then, you must visit Psili Ammos. There is something different with its sand. Even though I find the sand a bit annoying, this one was soft and gold and oddly (for my taste) enjoyable.

Vagia beach is also nice. The biggest part is secluded, but still, you can find an organised spot with a beach cafe.

Megalo Livadi is an amazing beach at island’s southwest side, its location and scenery provide for romantic sunsets.

Ganema beach is the biggest beach of the island, Sykamia is perfect when it’s not windy and Livadakia is the best option for a last swim before you get on board to the next destination. Livadakia is very close to the port and has many beach bars.

Other beaches worth visiting are Lia and Platys Gialos. I didn’t have the time to enjoy them due to the few days of my stay, but they are on my list for a future visit.

IMPORTANT NOTE→ In general, only few of the aforementioned beaches are organised with facilities. Most of them are remote; so make sure to have basic provisions.

Breakfast and Greek Coffee

“Stou Stratou” is the most popular one, offering a wide range of choices: Breakfast, coffee, fresh juices and as the night approaches, cocktails, drinks and finger food. One can find other places that offer breakfast options in Limani, but “Stou Stratou” is the cutest one.

Food

I guess now you will be wondering: Hmmmm!!! And how about food?

Yes, it is true that this is one more important reason to visit a place. And when it comes to summer in Greece, I guess you have imagined the picture of a full of traditional goodies table by the sea. Well, yes. This is the one! I have a few options for you and you can thank me later.

Firstly, feel free to taste the local way of serving Greek salad, with mizithra (local cheese) instead of feta. If you want to taste traditional Greek cuisine, then you should visit ‘Kyklopas’ in Megalo Livadi. The best choice- from the taverns I visited- is ‘Stamatis’, located in Limani (port). People in charge will inform you about the fresh fish of the day and you should also try the homemade fries. Little joys of life!

IMPORTANT NOTE → In Serifos you will enjoy tasty food in really affordable prices.

Local delicacies

Speaking of local delicacies, you should definitely try the local cheese ‘mizithra’ or ‘xinomizithra’ and also ‘marathopita’ (fennel pie). There are meat choices as well, such as ‘syglino’ (traditional cured pork). Make sure to accompany the above with local wines.

Drinks and Music

Drinks can be enjoyed in Chora’s alleys or in a beautiful terraces. “Aeriko” and “Gaidaros” are the options depending on the mood; particularly “Gaidaros” pushes very interesting pop sounds and oldies remakes. If you find yourself in Limani, you can enjoy your drinks either in “Shark” or in “Yacht Club”.

IMPORTANT NOTE→ Have good friends with you and you will enjoy your drink everywhere!"

Stroll along the alleys, feel embraced by the locals, find yourself in the Cycladic beaches, enjoy drinks with friends and explore the imposing and rough beauty of the island. If you are looking for a calm atmosphere combined with the Cycladic beauty, then Serifos is your choice!

IMPORTANT NOTE→ Don’t forget to wear your best smile and take the best mood with you. You are on vacation at a lovely Greek island!
