The ongoing refugee crisis has seen tourism numbers on the island of Lesvos plunge as the island remains the first port of call for thousands of refugees crossing the Aegean from Turkey.
According to the latest stats issued by the airport of the island of Lesvos, passenger arrivals in June 2016 dropped to just 4,825, down from 15,026 in the same month last year, for a decline of 67.89% and an estimated loss of revenues of about six million euros.
Should this trend continue this season it will be a major blow to the island’s tourism revenue, with each day lost translating into 1.5-2 day’s wages and between five and six kilos of fish and agricultural products consumed.
Business and community leaders on the island are seeking measures from the Greek government to mitigate the losses by seeking lower utility rates, tax breaks and incentives and so forth.
