The international golf world is expected to make its way to Greece for an international golf tournament in 2017 after Costa Navarino announced the “1st Messinia Pro Am’’ tournament, which will run February 21-24 under the auspices of the PGAs of Europe, the PGA of Greece and the Hellenic Olympic Academy.

The Messinia Pro Am initiative aims to promote golf tourism and the development of the game in Greece, particularly with its inclusion in the Olympic Games in 2016, the first time since 1900 and 1904. After all, golf like most sports has, unsurprisingly, an ancient Greek ancestor, ‘'sferistiki’’.

"Sferistiki" refers to all games played with a club, including hockey and golf,  and were highly popular in ancient times with a plethora of references in statues and amphoras dating back from 510 to 500 BCE.

It is expected that the “1st Messinia Pro Am”, will attract top professional and amateur golf players, celebrities and special guests from all over the world who will compete in “The Dunes Course” and “The Bay Course”, Greece’s sole signature golf courses in Greece. Both golf courses have been honoured as “Best Newcomers” by The World of Leading Golf Association in 2014.
