Greek media reports have confirmed a Turkish military helicopter entered Greek airspace, requesting permission to land in Greece.

The helicopter which put out a distress signal was given permission and landed in Alexandroupolis, which is close to the Greek Turkish border.

The identity of the helicopter personnel have been confirmed as members of the Turkish army who were responsible for yesterday's failed military coup, fleeing Turkey to avoid persecution.

Greek authorities intercepted the Turkish helicopter and all passengers were arrested.

All personnel on board have now requested political asylum from Greek political authorities.
