Greece defeated the World & European Champions, Serbia, in penalties to win the Bor Water Polo Tournament in preparation for next month’s Olympic Games. Despite it being a friendly tournament, it was good practice, before Rio, against the “powerhouses” of international Water Polo.

The Bor Tournament was held in Serbia as a “friendly” competition for teams preparing for the Rio 2016 Summer Olympic Games. In the group stage, Greece finished in 2nd place, behind Serbia, after 2 wins (Spain, France) and one loss (Serbia). In the semi-finals, the Galanolefki defeated Italy on penalties and advanced to face Serbia in today’s final.

Greece fell behind early 4-1, but was able to catch up and take a 5-4 lead after dominating the second quarter. The Greeks kept a two goal advantage for most of the second half and two goals in the final 3 minutes from Serbia sent the game to penalties. In the shootout, Greece defeated the hosts 6-5 and were crowned champions of the 2016 Bor Tournament.

The win will boost the team’s confidence in light of the Rio Olympic Games. Serbia has dominated international water polo over the years and are currently the World and European Champions. They are the favorites for the gold medal in Rio while Greece is also a favorite to win a medal at the Olympic Games.
