A 19-year-old Greek teenager was shot dead after throwing himself in front of the gunman in an attempt to protect his twin sister during last Friday’s shooting spree in Munich.

The Greek teenager has now been identified as Hossein Daiyitsik from the village of Aratos, near Komotini in Northern Greece.

The shooter was a German born Iranian teenager named Ali Sonboly who went on a shooting spree before killing himself, last Friday at the Olympia shopping mall in Munich, killing at least nine people, and leaving 27 injured victims, including children.

According to British newspaper Daily Mail the Greek teenager, who has been hailed as a hero, had only visited the area to buy gifts for his family when he became caught up in the crossfire.

"The toll of yesterday’s tragic attack at the Olympia shopping mall in Munich unfortunately includes a Greek citizen among the victims. Greece’s Consul General in Munich is proceeding with all necessary actions, in consultation with the competent German authorities," said the Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias.

The tragedy began in McDonald’s at 4.50pm when Sonboly, who had no known links to ISIS, came out of the toilets and shouted ‘Alluha Akbar’ meaning 'God is great’ and opened fire with a pistol.

Iranian-German gunman Ali Sonboly, 18, who reportedly had mental health issues, went on the rampage with a pistol and 300 rounds of ammunition.

Police raided his home and found a rucksack with a book called ‘Why Kids Kill’. In his room they also found documents on mass shootings and said he was ‘obsessed’ with German teenager Tim Kretschmer, who shot dead 15 of his classmates in 2009.
