Pavlos Mamalos has won the GOLD medal in the Men’s Weightlifting 107kg event! The Greek athlete lifted 238 kg to set a new Paralympic Record.
Going into today’s Men’s Weightlifting (under 107kg) event, Pavlos Mamalos was the favorite for the gold medal. The current world record holder, first lifted 233 kg and essentially secured the gold medal after lifting 234 kg. He went on to show his amazing abilities and set a new Paralympic Record by surpassing 238 kg. Mamalos attempted to set a new world record, but he failed to lift 243.5 kg. With his lift of 238 kg he won the GOLD medal ahead of Mohamed Ahmed from Egypt (233 kg) and Ali Sadeghzadehsalmani from Iran (226 kg).
The Olympic Gold was the only medal missing from Mamalos’ collection after winning silver in Beijing (2008) and bronze in London (2012). This is Greece’s 3rd gold medal in Rio and the 10th medal overall.
Che John Fernandes also won the gold medal in the Men’s Shot Put F53 event soon after Pavlos Mamalos’ gold in Weightlifting. His best throw was registered at 8.44 meters.
Che John Fernandes continued another great day for Greece at the Paralympics. Fernandes set the bar high with a new European record after his first throw of 8.44 meters in the Men’s Shot Put F53 event (he held the record before at 8.35 meters). The American Scott Severn came close to Fernandes but his best throw was 3 centimeters short at 8.41 meters, giving Fernandes the gold medal!
It is Greece’s second gold medal of the day after Pavlos Mamalos won gold in the Men’s Weightlifting 107kg event. Additionally, this is Greece’s 5th medal in Shot Put in Rio. Greece has now won 4 golds, 3 silvers, and 4 bronze at the Paralympic Games.
