Greece’s ambassador to Brazil has reportedly gone ‘missing’ according to the Greek foreign ministry.

Government sources claim Ambassador Kyriakos Amiridis has not been seen by his family since Monday.

“Following the immediate actions of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs it requested the full mobilisation of all the authorities in Brazil, which began an investigation to gather more information on the case,” the ministry said.

“The ministry and the Greek embassy in Brasilia are monitoring closely the case and shall, in close cooperation with the Brazilian authorities, proceed with all the necessary actions,” it added.

Kidnapping and extortion of politicians and business people is not uncommon in Brazil, which has been described as crime capital of the world, with a homicide rate of 0-35 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants, placing it  in the top 20 countries by intentional homicide rate.

There were a total of 50,108 murders in Brazil in 2015.
