Greece asks UK for help over Cyprus solution

The Greek Prime Minister’s office has confirmed that Alexis Tsipras had called his British counterpart Theresa May for her support in achieving a ‘fair and viable’ solution for Cyprus ahead of the crucial talks in Geneva on January 12.

The Greek Prime Minister presented May with Greece’s position concerning current developments on the island with particular reference to abolishing guarantees and the withdrawal of Turkish troops. He also “asked for a fair and viable solution, based on UN’s decisions and the European acquis”.

Meanwhile Greece Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias is also scheduled to meet the United Nations’ Special Adviser on Cyprus Espen Barth Eide today Wednesday, to discuss the latest developments on the Cyprus issue, ahead of the Geneva talks.

Cyprus is the only EU member state that is currently occupied by foreign military forces.
