More than 35,000 expected at Sephamore Greek Festival 2017

More than 35,000 people are expected to attend the Semaphore Foreshore this weekend on both the 14 and 15th of January to experience the 2017 Delphi Bank Semaphore Greek Festival.

The Festival, now in its 38^th year, provides members of the community from all backgrounds with an opportunity to experience Greek culture, music, dancing and food in a family-friendly atmosphere.

The Festival is held at the Semaphore foreshore over two days next to the Semaphore jetty, the playground and the foreshore amusements.

Doors open at 11am on both days and the Festival program showcases and celebrates Greek culture and heritage within South Australia’s broader multicultural context. Expect a weekend of traditional Greek food, sweets and imported drinks, countless hours of live music and dancing all the way till midnight!

Over 250 of local volunteers from the Greek Community of Port Adelaide, including grandparents, parents and children, dedicate endless hours throughout the year to serving hundreds of visitors attending the event. It is this community and family spirit that underpins the essence of the festival.

The president of the Community, John Douvartzidis says the biggest change to this year’s event is the enhanced daytime program that showcases not only a variety of acts but also competitions on the hour and other activations. Spectators can engage with a variety of activations and can win major prizes or their lunch for free.

“We have prepared a family friendly program for both Saturday and Saturday. At midday families, can participate in our dance workshops and win their lunch for free. For the lovers of Greek food we are hosting a “Bake off” on Saturday afternoon and on Sunday afternoon, sports fans will have the opportunity to meet athletes from Port Power and Adelaide United.” Mr Douvartzidis says.

“Our signature sweet is the traditional Greek honey puffs and they are like a doughy mixture which gets fried and we are renowned for them. In fact, this year we are training for a world record.”

TV personality George Donikian, will host the event.
