Goal 4 Leo- Greek national soccer team supporting their colleague

The Εθνική Ομάδα ποδοσφαίρου, The Greek National Football Team announced via their offical Instagram account of the support that the National Players will be contributing to fellow soccer colleague, 21 year old Leonidas Koutsouki who was diagnosed with leukemia.

The Instagram post was reposted by the players of the Greek National Football Team including Vellios Apostolos, Andreas Samaris and Georgios Tzavellas.

The Instagram post states “The players of the National Men’s Team decided to financially support the cost of treatment of 20-year old footballer Koutsouki Leonidas Zakynthos, diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. Leonidas needs to be moved to a specialised centre in Boston, where he will undergo a bone marrow transplant, and for this purpose the international players have provided all money corresponding to the last two salaries.”

This isn’t the first time Greek Footballers have supported their sick colleague. In May 2016 Greek footballers appeared in a friendly game to raise money for Leonidas Koutsoukis’ treatment. The match was organised by the Greek player union PSAP, which fielded a team including 2004 European champion national team: Giorgos Karagounis, Stelios Giannakopoulos, Kostas Katsouranis, Angelos Basinas and Kostas Chalkias.

The President of PSAP Dionysios Dimopoulos, in his speech on match day, said “We are delighted and honoured we are with you today… to show our support to our beloved colleague Leonidas Koutsouki, who gives his own difficult struggle with bravery, tenacity and determination and we are sure to emerge victorious. The active support of the State of P.S.A.P., Union Football Associations Zakynthos , and all lovers of Leonidas, is the best proof of sensitivity, solidarity, responsibility and love to a child who has earned the appreciation and respect for all the morals and dignity. Leonidas is our man, a member of the Panhellenic Association Paid Footballers and our presence here in the island of Zakynthos, in the game that is for him, not only supports himself and his family, but also the expression and manifestation of social person of P.S.A.P. to assist them in every effort in supporting our fellow human beings who need our help.”

Vassilis Torosidis also commented “On behalf of my teammates in the National, I invite all those who are free and available to contribute to the struggle of our young colleague. We will be next to everything you need (Leonidas).”
