Greece summer 2017 is getting closer and airlines worldwide are introducing new flights, adding more seats or boosting the frequency of their existing routes to destinations around the country, as Greece's tourism is expecting another record year at 41 of the country’s airports.

Many global carriers are now opening up to destinations that were until recently served exclusively by Greek airlines.

British Airways recently announced the launch of direct flights from London airport to Skiathos and is now serving 12 destinations including Athens, Mykonos, Thessaloniki, Santorini, Rhodes, Chania, Zakynthos and Kalamata.

Emirates made headlines with the launch of their new year-round-flights from Athens to New York -Dubai-Athens-Newark flight, which starts on March 12. There has been no non-stop daily year-round service from Greece to the US since 2012.

Scoot is bringing passengers from Australia and Asia cheap and frequent flights between the Asia Pacific and Europe through Athens with Singapore- Athens flights every Tuesday and Thursday as of June 20.

Air France has announced the launch of new routes from Athens to popular sumer French airports Nice, Toulouse and Marseille from July 24 to September 3.

Italian airline Alitalia will launch a new daily non-stop between Athens and Tel Aviv in May, responding to growing demand.

Greece’s national carrier Aegean has also added international routes from Athens to  Kuwait, Edinburgh, Hanover, Strasbourg and Stuttgart and boosted flights to Dusseldorf, Tel Aviv, Amsterdam, Stuttgart, Cairo, Hanover, Alexandria, Madrid, Lisbon and Barcelona.

While Greek carrier Ellinair announced the launch of direct flights from Thessaloniki and Heraklion to Munich, Stuttgart, Frankfurt and Cologne. From the airport of Heraklion, Ellinair will also fly to Berlin.

  1. It is to be hoped that the facilities at Skiathos airport will be improved if this is the case. Last September only 2 men’s toilet cubicles were working in departures and no urinals and I have only ever seen these urinals covered by black rubbish bags since the new terminal opened. The departure lounge was dangerously overcrowded and the air conditioning totally ineffective.
