Asylum seekers steal Greek boat to escape back to Turkey

Two asylum seekers were arrested on the island of Chios on Thursday after stealing a boat as they attempted to escape from the island and return to Turkey.

The men, a 32 year old Syrian and a 28 year old Egyptian were spotted by coast guard authorities early Wednesday after setting sail for Turkey from St Hermione port.

They were subsequently arrested accused of theft while the boat was returned to its owner.

Meanwhile, a total of 52 migrants and refugees arrived at Chios in the last 24 hours while no arrivals were reported on Lesvos and Samos with an estimated 9,921 people recorded in the hotspots on Lesvos, Chios and Samos.
