Bank of Sydney supporting Juvenile Diabetes

By 7 years ago

The Bank of Sydney is holding its 1st Annual Charity Dinner in support of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) on March 10, at Sydney's King Street Wharf.

JDRF was founded by parents of children with type 1 diabetes and is dedicated to finding a cure for type 1 diabetes and its complications through the support of research.

Type 1 Diabetes is a life-long autoimmune disease that can strike both children and adults and is not caused by diet or lifestyle. Affecting over 120,000 Australians, T1D is caused by the immune system mistakenly turning on itself, destroying the cells that produce insulin.

To stay alive, people with T1D must have a constant supply of insulin through painful needles or an insulin pump and they test their blood sugar by pricking their fingers at least four times a day. People diagnosed must be constantly prepared for potential hypoglycemic (low blood sugar) and hyperglycemic (high blood sugar) reactions. Both can be life threatening.

Type 1 diabetes can occur at any age. In type 1 diabetes, a person's pancreas produces little or no insulin, this is what allows the body to process sugar to create energy, without insulin, the body literally starves as it cannot process food.

Symptoms can include →

  • extreme thirst
  • constant hunger
  • sudden weight loss
  • frequent urination
  • blurred vision
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • extreme tiredness
  • infections

When a child is diagnosed with type 1 diabetes it affects the entire family. Even when a child has had type 1 diabetes for many years there are still adjustments to be made with each new activity or growth spurt. It can be a constant learning curve.path.

The Bank of Sydney hopes to raise funds to help children and their families by hosting a fun evening at Nick’s Bar and Grill.

The special event hosted by the ‘Hair Gel Goddess, Effie’ (Mary Coustas) comes with a 3 course meal and drinks, light entertainment, raffles, lucky door prize, and more.
