A Syrian refugee who set himself on fire on Thursday to protest his stay at the refugee reception and identification centre on Chios island was taken to the “Skulitsio” hospital with 90% burns to his body.
A local policeman who tried to save the Syrian man suffered burns on his hands and face and was also transferred to hospital.
According to authorities, the man, who was staying at the VIAL camp on Chios and used self-immolation to protest alleged delays in the examination of his asylum request.
He is expected to be transferred to Athens to receive proper treatment for his burns.
