For the first time in the club’s history, the Olympiacos Women’s Volleyball team progressed to the final of the CEV Challenge Cup after defeating Yenisei from Russia in the golden set.
Olympiacos’ run in the Women's CEV Challenge Cup continues after they dramatically progressed to the final of this year’s competition. After their 3-1 win in the first leg on Thursday, Olympiacos travelled to Russia to face Yenisei for the second leg knowing that a win or a 3-2 loss would send them to the final of this year’s CEV Challenge Cup.
The Greek side got off to a good start in the first set, however an 11-2 run from the hosts gave Yenisei a 1-0 advantage in the match (25-22). The second set was one to forget for Olympiacos as they easily fell 25-11. Olympiacos’ strongest performance came in the third set, however it was not enough as Yenisei went on to win the set 25-23 and the match 3-0.
The result sent the two legged tie into the golden set (tiebreaker) and the first team to reach 15 points (win by two) would earn a place in the final of this year’s competition.
The Erythrolefki got off to a great start pulling ahead 3-8, but the Russians brought the set level at 9-9 and took the lead at 12-10. However, it was Olympiacos who had the final say coming back to earn a dramatic 13-15 set victory, booking their place in the final of the CEV Challenge Cup for the first time in the club's history.
Olympiacos will now face either Schweriner (GER) or Bursa (TUR) in the two legged final with Bursa holding the clear advantage after winning the first leg 1-3 in Germany. The first leg of the final will be played on April 12 and the second leg will be held four days later on April 16th.
A reminder the Olympiacos women’s volleyball team have never won a European Title and will hope to do so in this year’s Challenge Cup.
