Leading Rebetika band Apodimi Compania is back in Australia- due to popular demand- and are set to delight fans in Sydney on Sunday with their show "From Thrace to Crete."
They have been hailed one of the best in Rebetika and Greek Folk Song and Dance music; offering an unparalleled opportunity for their listeners to experience the musical flowering of rural Greece with its various regional styles of folk music, together with the twentieth century urban rebetika, often called “the Greek Blues.”
The group performs both style of music on a variety of musical instruments, including the violin, six stringed bouzouki, tzouras, baglamas, banjo, guitar, oud and lute, as well as vocals.
Originating in Brunswick, Melbourne and now based in Athens for the past 22 years, their music ranges from Greek Folk music- including songs from Greek mainland to the melodies of the Aegean islands, Crete, the coast of Asia Minor and as far north as the region of Thrace. They also perform Rebetika music and perform both styles of music with passion and clarity.
Apodimi was hit by tragedy in March 2012 when original member Hector Cosmas suddenly passed away. The remaining members, Manuel Galiatsos, Yiannis Niarhos, George Galiatsos, Chrysoula Kehayioglou decided to keep the band going, as Hector would have wanted them to do. Joining them on their 2017 tour will be Apodimi’s latest member, Fiddle player, Vangelis Votteas.
