Greece nervous as Erdogan assumes ‘Sultan’ status

Greece and the rest of the world are reacting cautiously to the results of the recent Turkish referendum, which saw Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan claim victory on Sunday and assume sweeping new powers.

Erdogans victory is still disputed by opposition parties in Turkey who accuse his camp of fraudulent voting activity at polling booths.

SYRIZA MEP and Vice President of European Parliament Dimitris Papadimoulis said the referendum showed just how divided Turkey is and described the result as a disputed victory by Erdogan.

Meanwhile New Democracy Spokesman Giorgos Koumountsakos urged Turkey to handle the result wisely and said that Greece seeks friendly relations with the neighbouring country.

According to sources the Tsipras government sent a message of support of the stability and democracy in Turkey underlining that Greece wants a Turkey that will support the dialogue and cooperation based on mutual respect.

"We are watching closely and with interest the developments in the neighouring country and the results of the referendum. The decision of the Turkish people for their future will be respected. We support the stability and the democracy in the neighbouring country. We wish for a Turkey that will contribute in the dialogue and the cooperation based on the mutual respect" said the comment of the Greek government's sources.
