Retail stores in tourism areas around Greece will open 30 Sundays a year, Economy Minister Dimitris Papadimitriou, announced on Tuesday.

The operation of stores on Sundays is among the reforms brought to the table by Greece’s international lenders and the Greek government has now agreed to implement this.

Speaking to Greek media on Tuesday, Papadimitriou said that it has been agreed for shops to operate extra Sundays a year, mainly in tourist areas, including the centre of Athens, in the beach area surrounding Sounio, some areas of Piraeus, Thessaloniki and around Athens International Airport.

Many store owners and employees are enraged by the new implementation, however the Minister says the measure is expected to be voted in parliament shortly.
