The Ladies Auxiliary of the Greek Orthodox Christian Parish of St George Rose Bay in Sydney, held their annual Gala Dinner Dance on Saturday 28th of April, celebrating 55 years of community service.
Held at the Sofitel Sydney Wentworth, the fun evening was filled with lots of eating, dancing and a special appearance by the Greek Presidential Guard.
The event raised over $28,000, with funds going towards the refurbishment of the churches hall facilities for use by the Rose Bay Greek Orthodox community, their families, schools and cultural groups.
St George Rose Bay Parish was built in 1962 with the concerted efforts of some 100 families. Beginning with the first Liturgy of 8th April, 1962, the Church was consecrated by Archbishop Ezekiel and dedicated as a War Memorial by the Governor of New South Wales, Sir Eric Woodward, on 25th November, 1962.
The Ladies Auxiliary was established in January of 1958 before the church was being built. A sum of 2,756 Australian Pounds was raised by the original committee, which was a huge sum in 1958 and given to the church building fund. The aim of the group was to foster fellowship within the parish by holding functions throughout the year enabling them to continue their good work.
The first President was Marie Carr whose untiring effort and enthusiasm in organising various fund raising functions set the pattern, which was carried by subsequent Presidents. The first Secretary was Laura Varvaressos and Treasurer, Irene Andronicos.
The current President Marie Bekiaris and all of the The Ladies Auxiliary committee continue to work tirelessly to keep and foster their parish’s Greek heritage and traditions.
