Tragic train derailment in Thessaloniki leaves at least four dead

At least four people have been killed and five injured after a train travelling from Athens to Thessaloniki derailed.

The train went off the tracks near the station at the village of Adendro, 40 kilometres west of Thessaloniki Saturday night.

It is estimated that there were 100 people on board the carriage, which derailed.

According to Greek media reports, witnesses say they saw the train slam into a house, where the two occupants jumped off their balcony.

The emergency services were searching the house to see if there were any other casualties inside.

Railway company Trainose said the driver was in critical condition.

The cause of the accident is not yet known, a police official said.

Twelve fire brigade trucks and dozens of ambulances are at the scene where a rescue operation is still under way.
