Greece is celebrating International Museum Day today, Thursday May 18th with free admission and events all across the nation in an effort to raise awareness about their significance as a means of cultural exchange and mutual understanding.
An initiative of the International Council of Museums (ICOM), Museum Day is celebrated every year worldwide with more than 35,000 museums in over 145 countries participating in the event. The Thisseio-based Greek branch of the ICOM was founded in 1983 and has over 500 members.
This year’s theme is "Museums and Contested Histories: Saying the Unspeakable in Museums."
The Greek branch of ICOM this year will honour the Municipal Museum of the Kalavrita Holocaust and hold an event in its courtyard on Friday, May 19, at 7pm.
