Lesvos earthquake buries woman under her house

As earlier reported, the Greek island of Lesvos was hit by a massive 6.1 Richter scale earthquake on Monday injuring scores of people and killing a 45-year old woman who was buried under the rubble as her house collapsed on her.

According to reports, most damage occurred in the village of Vrisa in southern Lesvos where more than 90% of the old buildings had collapsed. Nearly 800 villagers were evacuated in time by rescue teams.

Lesvos Deputy Mayor for Environment and Civil Protection Nikos Karasavvas, said the village has suffered "total destruction" and even the buildings still standing "have serious and visible problems".

Karasavvas also reported several injured in the village, saying that these were are being taken to the Polichnitou Health Centre and Mytiline Hospital.

Coordinating the response in Plomari are Lesvos Mayor Spiros Galinos and Deputy Mayors Kostas Katsaros and Manolis Armenakas, while Deputy Mayors Giorgos Katzanos and Nikos Karasavvas are coordinating operations from Vrisa. According to the regional general secretary Giorgos Kambouris, the destruction in the village is complete, while among the buildings that collapsed is the old schoolhouse.

According to the Geodynamic Institute in Athens the earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale struck in the sea between the island and the coast of Turkey at 15:28 on Monday.
