Greece insists on NO TURKISH TROOPS on divided island

Greece insists on discussing the removal of Turkish troops from the island as part of negotiation talks despite Turkey’s resistance.

This follows statements by Turkey’s Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu on Tuesday who said his country will not discuss a proposal requesting no guarantees and no Turkish troops on Cyprus.

Greece’s Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras spoke with his Turkish counterpart Binali Yildirim yesterday by phone regarding the ongoing Cyprus talks in Switzerland under the auspices of the UN.

Tsipras reiterated to Yildirim that the island required a just and viable solution that does not require a call guarantor powers, interventionist measures or occupation armies and insisted that any solution will be founded on the basis of United Nations Security Council resolutions and on Cyprus' status as a member of the European Union.

Both Prime Ministers agreed to promote more progress in the ongoing talks, especially  in the presence of the UN Secretary General on Thursday.
