Young Greek tennis ace Maria Sakkari on Wednesday qualified for the third round of Wimbledon after completing an impressive comeback victory against Kristyna Pliskova.
The 21-year-old Sakkari, who is ranked 98th in the world, came back from being set and a break down to get the job done, winning her ladies singles match 6-7(6), 6-4, 6-4.
It’s the second time Sakkari is playing at Wimbledon, while it’s the second time she has made the third round of a grand slam event, the first being at the 2017 Australian Open.
Sakkari will now face Great Britain’s 26-year-old Johanna Konta who defeated the Croatian Donna Vekic.
VALLIANT TSITSIPAS BOWS OUT
While Sakkari marches on, Stefanos Tsitsipas had no such luck in the men’s draw.
After qualifying for his second grand slam tournament in a row after making the main draw also at Roland Garros in Paris, the 18-year-old lost out to Serbian Dusan Lajovic 4-6, 4-6, 4-6 in the first round.
Despite the loss, Tsitsipas, who is currently 190 in the Emirates ATP Rankings, can look back on the last couple of months with immense pride as he continues his learning curve at the top level.
