A Greek Australian tourist claims he was attacked by a group of men for shopping in Athens on a Sunday.

The man told Greek media he was attacked by the men as he left a shop on popular Ermou Street, in the city centre. He told television reporters “I was walking with my family, and they came near and punched me for no reason. I didn’t tell them anything, I didn’t know them. They told me ‘do not shop’.”

The attack occurred in front of the man’s wife, young daughter and mother in law just after the end of a protest by employees who are against Sunday trading.

“We are just tourists, we are returning to Australia tomorrow. We came here and spent our money for your economy, and they hit us? I’ll never come again, that’s for sure,” said his wife.

Stores, which were normally shut in Greece every Sunday are now allowed to open every Sunday from May to October, except for the second Sunday of August.
