A group of Turkish tourists were stopped by security guards on Sunday, for trying to take a photo outside Lefkos Pyrgos (White Tower) the archaeological monument and museum in the heart of Thessaloniki, which became a prison and place of mass executions during the period of Ottoman rule.

Reports from Macedonian newspaper seleo.gr claim locals saw the group pull the Turkish flag out and quickly alerted security staff, who ran and told the group to put the flag away. The Turkish tourists didn’t resist and moved along quickly from the site.

A group of Greek locals then took to the streets in the centre of the city, where they burnt the Turkish flag and protested against the incident and recent threats made by Turkish President Erdogan, which has seen tensions rise between the two countries.
