Greek President made honourary citizen of Amphipolis as he restates ancient Macedonia’s Hellenic identity

The President of the Hellenic Republic Prokopios Pavlopoulos was declared an honourary citizen of Amphipolis on Sunday as he prepared for a guided tour of the archeological site  where its major finds hit the news headlines about the possibility of finding Alexander the Great’s burial tomb there.

Pavlopoulos was taken on a guided tour through Kasta Hill by the alternate chief of Antiquities Ephorate of Serres Pinelopi Malama and the architect responsible for the restoration works Mihalis Lefantzis and was briefed on the course of the digging and afterwards underlined the need the excavation to continue.

After the tour of the site the Greek President noted the importance of the site and its contribution to the history of ancient Macedonia and further confirm the already accepted fact of its Hellenic identity.

Pavlopoulos underlined the huge importance of the excavation which, as he said, is recognised by the Greek and the foreign scientific community adding that it will assist in the understanding of the Macedonian Kingdom and in parallel the new findings certify the already documented hellenity of Macedonia. "We wish the works to resume as soon as possible".

Pavlopoulos was accompanied by Deputy Interior Minister responsible for Macedonia and Thrace Maria Kollia-Tsaroucha, regional governor Apostolos Tzitzikostas.
