Feta is Greece’s most famous cheese and according to many recent reports from dieticians and doctors around the globe, it’s also the healthiest cheese option in the world.

Mainly made from sheep or goat milk (often combined), Feta cheese is a nutrient-rich option and a deliciously flavoured dairy. Feta is easier to digest and much less allergenic and inflammatory than cheeses made from cow’s milk, which makes it a better option for those who may be sensitive to dairy products.

Feta is a soft brined cheese characterised by few to no holes and unlike many French cheeses, it has no skin. The nutritional benefits will depend on exactly what brand and type of Feta you buy.

Feta’s nutritional overview includes significant protein; calcium; B-complex vitamins riboflavin, vitamin B6, B12, and pantothenic acid; vitamin A; iron; phosphorus; zinc; and many trace minerals (selenium, magnesium, potassium, copper, and manganese).

Originating thousands of years ago, this salty cheese goes through a pickling process that develops its distinct flavour. Authentic Greek Feta only comes from certain regions in Greece and here we take a look at the massive benefits of eating this delicious dairy.

High in Nutrition

As a rich source of calcium, Feta cheese allows you to take advantage of research suggesting that calcium (combined with vitamin D) helps protect the body against many diseases. The protein alpha-lactalbumin can be found in this Greek cheese as well, and when it binds to calcium and zinc ions, it has been suggested to have antibacterial and antitumor properties.

Supports bone health

Calcium is great for bones, it increases peak bone mass, especially in children and teens into those in their 20s. The greater peak bone mass, the less risk of osteoporosis and other conditions involving the loss of bone mass.

Boosts immune system

Feta is also high in protein and vitamin B, which helps fight infection and disease and keeps colds and flus away.

Packed with Probiotics

Another good thing about Feta cheese is that it provides you with helpful probiotics, which is the bacteria that lines your gut and a great option to get the right balance for your digestive system.

Suitable for people with cow's milk intolerance

For those with cow’s milk intolerance, thanks to Feta, you don’t have to give up cheese all together. Good quality Feta cheese is made primarily from sheep’s milk and sometimes goat’s milk, which is much easier on our stomachs.

  1. The very best and the most authentic FETA comes from one region, Epiros. The main brands are Epiros, Fage, and Dodoni. There are probably others but I do not know them. But what I do know is that there are many products which claim to be Feta but which do NOT pass the muster. Just as there are so many fake Greek yogurts, the worst being Turkish Chobani
