Government announces financial aid for flood victims

The Greek government announced on Monday a series of relief measures for households affected by the recent torrential rain in West Attica.

Government spokesman Dimitris Tzanakopoulos explained that there will be financial compensation for households and business for damages from the extreme weather conditions.

Tzanakopoulos also stressed that there will be financial support for accommodation and food as well as compensation for home appliances and professional equipment.

"All households that have suffered damage in the areas of western Attica will receive 5,000 euros in emergency aid, while companies will receive 8,000 euros," he stressed.

The same measures will also apply for flood victims on the islands of Symi and Samothrace, as well as in the area of Aghia in Larissa and the coast of Katerini.

Meanwhile Interior Minister Panos Skourletis on Monday approved the disbursement of 900,000 euros in emergency financial aid for the flood-stricken towns of Mandra and Megara, to restore infrastructure damaged in last week's deadly flash floods in Western Attica.

The funds have been distributed to the municipal authorities in each town, in response to their requests, with 500,000 euros approved for Mandra and 400,000 euros for Megara.
