The Mayor of Lesvos declared his island was in a state of emergency on Tuesday, during a meeting with the Greek PM and called for immediate action over the migration crisis.
The meeting was joined by the Mayors of Samos and Chios who pleaded with Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, to take urgent measures to decongest their islands from the migrant population.
“Lesvos is now in a state of emergency, we cannot keep talking about the [EU-Turkey] deal,” said Lesvos Mayor, Spyros Galinos, who said they all asked the Prime Minister to urgently find a solution as soon as possible.
“We have exceeded every tolerable situation both for the local community and the refugees,” said Chios Mayor, Manolis Vournous, who acknowledged that some changes in the deal, such as returns to Turkey, require time to be carried out, but added that the islands cannot wait.
“We are here to demand the self-evident -that is, the decongestion [of the islands] and based on what we discussed, it will happen,” Samos Mayor Mihalis Angelopoulos said.
