Golden Dawn’s leader Nikos Michaloliakos was given an eight-month suspended jail sentence by a misdemeanours court on Friday for “incitement to violence, to commit crimes or create discord.”

The case was brought to court by Greek Helsinki Monitor, following a report in Greek newspaper “Efimeritha ton Syntakton”.

The sentence concerns an incident from September 2011 where Michaloliakos said during a speech that he would “break” the heads of his political opponents.

Meanwhile, two weeks ago, the island of Chios declared Golden Dawn was not welcome on the island, with the municipal council and mayor Manolis Vournous unanimously declaring the officials of the extreme right party Golden Dawn to be ‘personae non gratae’ on their island, in a resolution voted on by councillors.

“The presence of the neo-nazi organisation is a huge provocation to the island’s democratic morals and the municipality of Chios can’t remain idle. The Golden Dawn members that are under indictment are persons unwelcome on Chios. Chios is the island of national resistance and of democratic struggle that sternly and categorically disapproves of the presence of the descendants of nazism in our land” said the resolution.
