The Greek Australian Community in Sydney will celebrate with large crowds in honour of Greece’s Independence Day, this Sunday, March 25.

The event will begin with a Thanksgiving Service Doxology in Redfern, then a Memorial Service with laying of wreaths will take place in Martin Place, which will then lead to a march from the CBD through to the iconic Opera House.

The Parade will take place in the presence of His Eminence Archbishop Stylianos, the President of the Greek Orthodox Community of Australia Mr. Harry Danalis, Federal, State and Local government representatives, as well as the Ambassador, Consulat and Greek and Cypriot Diplomatic Officials.

The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia has sent out this message to the Greek Community of Sydney-

While the President of the Hellenic Republic, Prokopis Pavlopoulos has also sent a message to the Greek diaspora marking the occasion of the National Day of Greece.

“We celebrate, with due respect and due splendor, Greece in 1821, which constituted the “Resurrection” of our people, as it led to the abolition of the long-suffering enslavement of our Ancestors in the Ottoman and the creation of the modern Greek state. Then, as always in their heroic and centuries-long history, the Greeks emerged and ignored the aristocratic prowess of the conquerors and revolted to regain their Freedom, which is, as I have repeatedly stressed, an existential authority and hence a way of life for our nation and our people,” says the President.

Sydneysiders, get your blue and white flags ready and make your way to the city this Sunday to join the Greek Independence Day celebrations, which will definitely have you feeling proud of your Greek ancestors, history and culture.
