If you are in the Brooklyn area of NY and craving some Greek cooking that reminds you of Mama’s or Yiayia’s dishes, head to Something Greek, which has become a hit with New Yorkers, who drive from all over the state to eat their famous Pastitso.

From the blue and white décor in the dining room, to the fine filo pastry that is handmade for their specialties, including Spanokopita and Baklava, Something Greek evokes the relaxing mood of a sun-washed island on the Aegean.

The popular eatery, on Third Avenue, also has an outdoor area where you can enjoy some alfresco dining, while enjoying the mouthwatering menu of Greek favourites, just the way Mama and Yiayia make them.

Pauline Mitilineos and her children, including her son Anastasios, opened up the restaurant a few years back and to this day, you will find Pauline in the kitchen personally preparing her specialties including Moussaka, Shrimp Santorini, Gemista and her now famous Pastitso, which is not your average size! Pauline adds extra cream and pasta, making it a huge serving and filling meal, which has been driving locals crazy!

The family run restaurant also employ full-time onsite butchers to prepare their meats and use fresh ingredients to ensure everything is authentic and as close to Greek tastes and flavours as possible.

The recipes are all family secrets, says Mitilineos, who loves using extra virgin olive oil for her pastries, and makes everything fresh daily.

“Our food is different from other Greek restaurants because I am the one who cooks here,” she says.
