Trump backs recovery of Greek economy

As Greece prepares for this week’s Eurogroup concerning its exit from creditor supervision, the US ambassador to Athens Geoffrey Pyatt expressed the strong support of the Trump government for Greece’s economic recovery, also noting that the “US sees Greece as a pillar of stability in the wider region.”

Pyatt made the comments during a dinner on Monday within the framework of the Greek Investment Roadshow 2018 organised by the Hellenic American Chamber of Commerce, the Athens Stock Exchange and the Consulate General of Greece on Monday in New York.

Present at the event was Alternate Economy and Development Minister Alexis Charitsis.

The Ambassador also referred to the Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF) where the US will be the honoured country. As he said, this is an extremely promising moment for Greek-American relations.

Charitsis said he has been present in similar events over the past two years, but he can now state with complete confidence that Greece has turned a page.

“We are only a few weeks away from exiting the memorandum, but the change is already here,” Charitsis said. “The current economic situation is improving, and that is what all key indices show,” he said, citing growth, unemployment and investment figures.

“In the last two years, in 2016 and 2017 we had more investment than in the first five years of the crisis put together. So we can say that we are gradually leaving the crisis behind us. Certainly there are very strong challenges ahead, there is much more work to be done and we need all of you to support this change,” he said.
