Greek and British PM

Greece's Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras met with his British counterpart Theresa May at 10 Downing Street on Tuesday and stressed the need for both countries to improve their economic ties on all levels now more than ever.

The Greek PM noted that both countries have undergone critical challenges in the last few years  such as the financial crisis for Greece and the Brexit for the UK.

Speaking to media following his meeting, Alexis Tsipras said his visit to London had been constructive and the timing excellent. There are prospects for closer cooperation between Greece and the United Kingdom, he added, and cited the present collaboration in defence.

"I had the opportunity for a very constructive meeting with Prime Minister Theresa May," the Greek premier said, "at a great moment for Greece," following the Eurogroup decision on the completion of the last adjustment program and debt reduction.

Tsipras said that he had also raised the issue of the return to Greece of the Parthenon sculptures with May, saying their natural place was with the Parthenon, where ancient Greeks gave birth to a global cultural heritage.
