“Nefeli” causes extreme weather phenomena across Greece

Greece’s National Meteorological Service (EMY) has issued a “red alert” warning of extreme weather phenomena with heavy rainfalls and powerful thunderstorms. Barometric low “Nefeli” started on Monday and is expected to move away by Friday, June 29, 2018.

The weather took a turn for the worst on Tuesday, with rainfall exceeding 50 millimetres in many parts of the country.

There was serious flooding in Mandra, the seaside town that was hard hit in last November’s deadly floods.

The rain was also heavy in central Greece, where there were reports of serious flooding.

In the area of Kanalia, streams broke their banks and flooded around 30 homes while local roads were submerged.

Some 40 firefighters were on duty in the broader area and responded to scores of calls to pump out flooded basements or rescue stranded motorists, with the assistance of 17 fire engines.

There was widespread flooding in Larissa too and strong storms turned the streets of many areas of Halkidiki into rivers, while several vehicles in Nikiti drifted from the raging water and ended up in the sea and resulting in terrible traffic conditions in Cassandra and Sithonia.
