Greece’s 19-year-old Stefanos Tsitsipas defeated Italy’s Thomas Fabbiano 6-2 6-1 6-4 to advance to the Wimbledon round of 16 for the first time in his short career.
The Italian broke the young Greek’s serve in the opening game of the match, but the Greek would immediately break back and ultimately take the first set 6-2. The second set would be even easier for the Athenian, as he dominated, taking it 6-1. Fabbiano would put up more of a fight in the third set, but Tsitsipas would prove to be too strong, taking it 6-4 to book his place in the round of 16.
With this win, Tsitsipas becomes the first Greek man to reach the round of 16 at a major in 53 years, when Nicholas Kalogeropoulos did so at Wimbledon. Tsitsipas is also just the third Greek player ever (male or female) to make the round of 16 at a major, as Eleni Daniilidou had achieved this feat three times, with the last one being at the 2004 US Open.
Next up for Tsitsipas will be American John Isner, the world number nine. The match will be played on Monday at the All England Club. The two have played once before, with the American defeating the Greek 7-6 7-6 in Shanghai back in October.
