Greece’s tennis sensation Stefanos Tsitsipas is set to play the biggest match of his career today as he takes on American John Isner who is ranked 9, in Round 16 of Wimbledon.
The 31st seed Tsitsipas has become a hit with fans around the world due to his dynamic style.
He is the first Greek man in the round of 16 of Wimbledon since Nicky Kalogeropoulos in 1964, before the start of the professional era.
“It’s amazing. It’s an amazing feeling, and I feel very proud that I represent Greece and that all of my hard work is paying off,” says the 19-year-old, who will play big-serving American Isner later today.
Tsitsipas said his fighting character comes from the Greek side of his family.
“Sparta,” he said.
“I was a fighter and I hated losing since a very young age. Back in the day, I used to compete with children in my age group in Greece, and then I moved on to European level.
“But I’ve always wanted to be the best from a very young age. I just hated losing. That’s why I was always fighting.”
