Greek Men's Water Polo team continue Winning Streak

In Barcelona, the Greek national team chalked up the second win at the 2018 Men’s European Water Polo Championship, defeating the Netherlands 12:7.

Having thrashed Turkey 27:1 on Monday, Greece came into today’s game with plenty of confidence, duly making a strong start against Holland. The Ethniki Omada outscored the opponents 6:3 in the first period, comfortably finding openings in the shaky Dutch defence.

To their credit, Holland did offer more resistance in the final three frames, losing the second and fourth by one goal while drawing the third 2:2. Nevertheless, the Greeks expertly kept the Netherlands at bay, seeing the game out to earn a 12:7 victory. Angelos Vlachopoulos was on superb form, registering half of Greece’s goals. Alexandros Evgenios Gounas and Ioannis Fountoulis both scored twice.

Greece occupy joint first place of Group C with Croatia, with the game between the two countries on Friday set to decide who qualifies directly for the quarter-final.

The side in first position qualifies for the quarter-final stage. Teams in second and third places will compete in the playoffs.

Current Group C standings:

  1. Greece, 6 points
  2. Croatia, 6 points
  3. Netherlands, 0 points
  4. Turkey, 0 points
