Acropolis Athens

With temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius today, as Greece experiences its first huge heatwave for the season authorities have decided to close the Ancient Acropolis early.

The Acropolis and the Dionyssos Theater closed early yesterday and will also be closing today, Monday July 23 at 2pm, in order to protect staff and visitors from the dangers of heatstroke, the Culture Ministry announced.

Visitors who have purchased tickets online to one of the world’s greatest historical monuments, are requested by the Ministry to seek the ticket issuing posts and exchange their tickets to other dates.

The Acropolis and other ancient sites are major attractions for Greece’s tourism. It is expected that the country’s tourism is set to make history in 2018 with over 32 million visitors, in what will be a record year for the sector.
