Irish couple on Honeymoon Caught Up in Wildfires

An Irish couple on their honeymoon in Greece have been caught up in the wildfires.

Bride, Zoe Holohan, who works at Independent News & Media has been injured in the fire tragedy, while her husband, Brian O’Callaghan-Westropp, an operations and HR manager in Dublin, is still missing.

The pair were married in Ireland last Thursday and were honeymooning close to the town of Mati, the worst-affected area of the devastating fires that have killed at least 74 people.

The newlyweds were fleeing from the fires, when Zoe and Brian separated.

Zoe suffered serious burn injuries and is being treated at a local hospital, while family and friends anxiously for news of Brian’s location.

The President of Ireland, Michael D Higgins, who earlier this year visited Greece has expressed his sympathies to the President of Greece, Prokopis Pavlopoulos.  He said “I am very conscious of the resilience of the Greek people, who should be assisted by all of us in these difficult times…I offered, on behalf of the people of Ireland, our deepest condolences and our solidarity.”
