Bishop Ambrosios of Kalavryta was widely condemned after linking the wildfire tragedy to the wrath of God in a blog he wrote on Tuesday.
The controversial senior cleric had suggested the fires were punishment because of Greece's "atheist Prime Minister".
“Atheist Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras draws the wrath of God,” Amvrosios wrote.
“The atheists of SYRIZA are the causes of the general disaster! Their atheism draws the wrath of God!” he added.
The extraordinary statements were rebuked by Archbishop Ieronymos on Wednesday who called Ambrosios' words a 'sad phenomenon'.
"God is love. God does not take revenge but urges all to love one another... there is a limit to personal views,” Ieronymos said.
