Loukoumakis, a white poodle-cross was miraculously found alive a week after the devastating wildfires in the village of Mati, by hiding in an outdoor brick oven.
He was found traumatised and having difficulty breathing after he crawled into a brick-built hollow to protect himself when the wildfires began.
Animal rescue volunteer, Artemis Kyriakopoulou was in the area searching with others when she came across the fragile pooch and lured him out with a tin of dog food, although it did take her a couple of hours to convince him to leave his shelter.
“I saw there was something like an [outdoor] oven, and I figured if anything were alive, it would be in there. It’s so sad because we haven’t been able to find an owner – unfortunately, the owner may have died in the fire. I am soon heading back to Mati to look for more animals that might have survived,” Artemis said.
Diana Topali, who is offering Loukoumaki foster care says, “even its eyelashes are burnt, I wonder how this dog survived.”
Despite appearing weak, the dog extraordinarily was said to be in good health.
Hundreds of animals are believed to have perished in the blaze, which has to date claimed the lives of 91 people.
Loukoumakis, as he has been named by a vet, is believed to be four and a half years old.
He has been groomed and is slowly recovering with antibiotics, staying with Diana until he finds a permanent home.
