Aiming to support Greece after the nation experienced devastating wildfires in the Attica region, the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) encouraged travelers from around the globe to proceed with their plans to visit the country.
“Tourists, stick to your travel plans and go there! Tourism means much-needed income and creates new opportunities!” the UNWTO said via Twitter.
The UNWTO’s tweet followed a letter of support for the victims of the fatal fires, sent from Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili to Greek Tourism Minister Elena Kountoura on Wednesday.
The secretary-general expressed the “deep sorrow” of the organisation and the global tourism community during this challenging time for Greece.
“In this difficult moment allow me to convey, on my personal behalf and that of UNWTO, our heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of the victims and reiterate our full support to the people and the Government of Greece,” Pololikashvili said.
“The people of Greece have proven their resilience many times before and I truly believe this time will be no different,” he added.
