Tinos, which was named “Greece’s Leading Guest Experience Destination” at this year’sWorld Travel Awards (WTA), has managed to extend its tourism period this year, according to the island’s municipality.

According to released figures, the Cycladic island in May welcomed 10,000 additional tourists over the same month last year, noting a 40 percent increase in arrivals.

The island also welcomed more than 7,000 arrivals in June, compared to the same month in 2017.

Now, during the peak season, Tinos continues to see its arrivals rise.

“Tinos has managed to expand the tourism season, which was a key goal of the municipality’s strategy… Tourist traffic continues at an upward pace and, according to all forecasts, the year will close with impressive results,” the municipality said in an announcement.

According to the island’s mayor, Yiannis Siotos, the figures confirm the systematic effort that has been made by all markets relevant to the sector.

Tinos in late June was honored for its culture, gastronomy, beaches, sites and hospitality at the World Travel Awards (WTA) 2018 and named “Greece’s Leading Guest Experience Destination”.

“This award shows that Tinos is unique and among the most popular destinations, covering a large part of the international tourism demand, as well as the need for quality vacations,” Mayor Siotos had said during the awards ceremony that took place in Athens.

Tinos was nominated for the award along with other popular Aegean islands and destinations on mainland Greece, namely Chania on Crete, Kalymnos, Lesvos, Pelion, and Zagori.

Hailed as the “Oscars” of the travel industry, the awards acknowledge, reward and celebrate excellence across all sectors of the tourism industry.
