Fires Break Out on Island of Zakynthos

Greek authorities reported two forest fires raging in Zakynthos late on Thursday in the areas of Macherado and Koiliomenos with more than twenty firefighters dispatched to the areas with the help of an airplane and a helicopter.

The fires at Koiliomenos had split into two parts with one headed towards the village with the second part burning forest land, authorities said.

Meanwhile, at the fire in the area of Macherado, authorities dispatched eight firefighters with four vehicles on hand to put out the fire.

Authorities added that the fires were fanned by strong winds, that could pick up through the night.
