Following the tragic Attica fires, the Greek government announced legislative initiatives on Saturday that grant ministers the authority to demolition illegal constructions.
According to government sources the Act of Legislative Content under emergency procedures will grant authority to the Environment, Energy and Interior ministers to issue demolition acts.
"The assumption of immediate measures by the state, under the weight of the national tragedy the Greek people experienced, is imperative in order to proceed with the demolition of illegal building that is a threat for the public safety," said a government source.
The new decree allows for the authority of demolition to be transferred the current responsible service of the region of Attica to the Special Secretariat of Inspectors of the Energy and Environment Ministry. These acts include illegal buildings and constructions or other installations that are on beaches of the seafront, in national parks and in forests.
The cost for the demolitions will be covered by the Green Fund.
