Two villages on the Greek island of Evia were evacuated on Sunday as a forest fire raged, fanned by strong winds. The blaze broke out in the Dirfyon municipal region in a dry pine forest.
The fire brigade described the evacuation of Kontodespoti and Stavros village in central Evia, about 70 km (44 miles) from Athens, as a precaution.
Greece’s Fire Service says 50 personnel, 21 vehicles plus four firefighting aeroplanes and helicopters are involved in the operation to bring the fire under control.
